Restaurant News: Taco Bus’ first Sarasota location open

The popular Tampa-based Mexican restaurant is now open inside a Marathon gas station on South Tamiami Trail.

Years in the works, Taco Bus finally debuted its first Sarasota area location Monday.

The popular Tampa-based Mexican restaurant is now open inside the Marathon gas station at 6212 S. Tamiami Trail, with table and bartop seating. It will celebrate its grand opening next week with a 99-cent taco special.

Taco Bus offers tacos, burritos, tortas and more, with protein options including carne asada, shredded pork smoked in banana leaves and a limited-time only blackened shrimp and grouper burrito. Taco Bus is also known for its plentiful non-meat offerings, including portabella ranchero and butternut squash as well as vegan meat and dairy alternatives.

Initially, Taco Bus planned on opening its first Sarasota location downtown at 1548 Main St., the space currently occupied by Cask & Ale. However, they abandoned those plans in 2015 after city and community concerns about the walk-up window for to-go orders and its bus facade.

Since opening its first location in Tampa’s Seminole Heights neighborhood over a decade ago, Taco Bus has expanded to a dozen more Tampa Bay establishments, as well as Orlando and Lakeland. It also has developed a national following, appearing on the television shows “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” and “Man v. Food” and bringing its food truck to music festival Bonnaroo.

Taco Bus in Sarasota is currently open every day at 11 a.m.-11 p.m. For more information, call 941-922-1115 or visit taco-bus.com.
