Where to get amazing fish tacos this Lenten season Evansville Courier & Press
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — It’s Lent, and diners are consuming a lot of seafood, especially on Fridays. So, we took a tour of local restaurants to find some different styles of seafood tacos.
We found a lot! From griddled, flaked white fish with a simple lettuce and cheese sprinkle to elaborate fried filets buried under a mound of toppings…from traditional doubled small corn tortillas to burrito-sized flour wrappers, here are some good ones.

The Tin Fish is celebrated for seafood tacos, and this spot definitely has the market cornered as far as variety. The fish is served in a generous portion on a large flour tortilla, and diners get to choose from nine varieties of seafood, fried or grilled. Choices include fried calamari or cod, scallops, salmon, tilapia, snapper and more. Have it the original way with finely shredded cabbage, cheese, fresh pico de gallo, white and hot sauce; or enjoy it Tio Chico style with papaya salsa, cilantro and hot sauce. You may have an individual taco or order it as a plate with slaw and waffle fries.

The Burgh Haus is located inside the Showplace Entertainment Center in Newburgh and is a great stop for dinner before or after a movie. The fish tacos here are unusual. They come in a portion of three, in small flour tortillas. The lightly blackened fish is generously topped with a tomato sauce that has a flavor somewhere between marinara and mild sweet salsa. There are no veggies on the taco itself, but slices of fresh avocado and lime wedges are served to the side.

El Vaquero in Mount Vernon, Indiana, serves fish and shrimp tacos simply griddled with a hint of spice, then folded into a thin and delicate flour tortilla with shredded lettuce and a sprinkle of white cheese. They are wrapped in foil to keep the contents warm and the tortillas soft. We added a dab of mild salsa. They are sold individually.

All the tacos at La Campirana are very traditional, and the fish and spicy shrimp varieties are no exception. They are served on doubled corn tortillas with a generous sprinkle of shredded cabbage mix, fresh pico de gallo and slices of avocado. To the side comes slices of cucumber, radish, lime wedges and a creamy-spicy mayonnaise-based sauce. We love to hit La Campirana’s salsa bar for curtido slaw and green chiles torreados to round our tacos out even more. They are sold individually.

Our Pan-Latin restaurant, Los Alfaro’s, offers flavors of Mexico and Central and South America. The fish and shrimp tacos are a bit of a fusion concept. The chunks of white fish or shrimp are hand-breaded in a light cornmeal coating and fried, then presented in doubled soft white corn tortillas with a sprinkling of creamy colorful cabbage slaw. They come three to and order and can be served with seasoned French fries and tartar sauce.
Nellie’s is a café and diner with a lot of sandwich selections and is known for the huge slab of fried pollock on the Spicy Fish Po’Boy. Their fish tacos are made with this same crunchy battered fish, cut into bite-sized pieces and presented on warm flour tortillas with shredded bright green leaf lettuce, diced tomatoes, onion, shredded cheddar cheese and spicy mayonnaise sauce. They are served two to an order with one side. Be ready to start with a fork, because these loaded tortillas are far too full to pick up.

Henderson’s taco stop offers fish tacos, two to an order, on a Tex-Mex-Style plate with rice and refried beans. The tacos contain nicely-browned, mildly-spiced griddled tilapia with shredded lettuce and cheddar cheese and spicy mayonnaise-based sauce, all presented on a lightly toasted flour tortilla.
