Los Tacos & Desserts Opens On Dispensary Block In South Chicago

SOUTH CHICAGO — There’s a new place to celebrate Taco Tuesday on the Southeast Side. Los Tacos & Desserts serves up homestyle Mexican cuisine inspired by supper at Chef Jose Hernandez’s mom’s house.

“What I’m going for here is to serve food just like we do at home. It tastes like you’re eating at the house with us. Everything’s fresh. I make my own horchata. I make the guacamole fresh. A lot of our customers from this neighborhood are Mexican and they always tell me everything tastes so authentic,” Hernandez said. “Our green hot sauce is what my family serves at home. Everybody loves it. They think it’s avocado … but it’s not.”

Hernandez, Gage park native and his wife Veronica opened Los Tacos & Desserts earlier this month at 8548 S. Commercial Ave., a couple of doors down from the local weed shop.

That wasn’t by accident. “Yeah, man, we got this location because of the dispensary,” Hernandez said. “People go there, buy their stuff and come here to get some tacos. It’s good for business.”

If you go for the tacos (or a cheesy burrito and a side of buffalo chicken nachos), save room for rolled ice cream (served in traditional Mexican flavors) and the Hernandez’s sweet specialty, the Nutella, banana and strawberry “85th Street Crepe.”
